Northam's Bilya Koort Boodja Center has been recognised on the national stage for its contribution to promoting the indigenous culture.
The Indigenous centre for Nyoongar Culture and Environmental Knowledge received highly commended recognition at the 2019 National Awards for Excellence in Local Government last month.
Shire of Northam president Chris Antonio officially presented the award to councillors and staff at an ordinary council meeting on Wednesday, August 21.
The National are an annual celebration of Australian local government achievements.
The Shire of Northam project, that turned one earlier this month, missed out on the top award in the Promoting Indigenous Recognition category to the City of Fremantle for their One Day Indigenous festival.
Award organisers said the category was about celebrating, sharing and valuing our Indigenous culture and history.
