During Mental Health Week, Northam Men’s Shed hosted a presentation by Andrew McCann of Mental Illness Foundation of WA (MIFWA) and a road safety discussion on Driver Fatigue led by Cliff Simpson of WALGA’s RoadWise.
Funnily enough, much of that conversation was about the benefits of a good night’s sleep.
The event was funded by a community road safety event grant from WA State Government via the Road Safety Commission.
Mr McCann spoke about the importance of helping someone when they really need it.
Mental illness doesn’t discriminate, it can affect any one of us in some way.
“In the spirit of the Men’s Shed movement, we invited men of all ages and backgrounds to attend, and at this event we also invited wives and partners too, to find out how to better understand and support each other through difficult times,” said Men’s Shed president Rob Fraser.
Twenty-three people attended for the talks including four wives or partners, and consensus was- more of these men’s health initiatives, including topics such as andrology and dementia.
There are more sessions to follow in 2018/9.
For men interested in the activities of Northam Men’s Shed, come along to the Old Fire Station, Duke Street, on Wednesday and Friday mornings.
Cliff Simpson is the Road Safety Advisor for Wheatbelt North.
