Artists Revolution facilitating culture and idea development

Over the past few months, Artists Revolution director Patricia Rose and others involved with the not-for-profit have been meeting for Aboriginal Arts Development workshops.

Ms Rose said the workshops are being run to develop local ideas and art and crafts that could be translated into products to be sold in the centre when it opens to the public.

She said the role of Artists Revolution is to facilitate the workshops, provide materials and to encourage people to get involved and get the word out.

“We are getting the skills up for potential murals around town and for the cultural centre,” she said.

“We are seeking young people – that’s why we are doing t-shirts and making beads and jewellery.

“We want to promote language and culture through contemporary art.

“The Shire may purchase the products to sell in the cultural centre.

“We will start with the development to help them grow their art.”

The organisation received a $5000 Community Service Grant from the Northam Shire earlier this year, which has enabled them to hit the ground running on art and craft projects for the centre. 

They have been attending the Northam Rotary markets and other events around town with spray paints and canvases and encourage community members to join in and create art.

“We want to get more people from the Aboriginal community involved and to know what we’re doing,” Ms Rose said.

A workshop will be held at the CY O'connor TAFE in Northam on November 16, that will include spray painting and t-shirt design.

Ms Rose said she hoped community members would join in when they see the group creating art at an event, in the park or at the local farmers market.
