York police say serial hoon doesn't give up

The man had yet another car seized by police on Friday after a community tip-off.

Acting Sergeant Rob Wolfe said the man has had two cars and a motorbike impounded already this year, a total of four times.

"He had his car seized again two days after it was returned and another car was taken on Friday,"  Acting Seargant Wolfe said.

"It doesn't seem to stop him, he just gets another car."

Police say the man, who is a local York resident, has also been caught several times driving with a suspended licence.

Police say the man's partner has also had two cars of her own impounded this year.

Meanwhile new drug testing equipment being implemented later this year is expected to save time and resources for officers in the town.

York police recently detained a 48-year old man on after he tested positive to meth and cannabis while behind the wheel.

Officers say it's a common occurrence. "I think it's a big problem everywhere," Acting Sergeant Wolfe said.

"If you knew the state of a lot of the people driving on the roads, you'd feel a lot less secure."

Currently, drivers who test positive to roadside drug tests in York and in nearby towns are being driven 35 minutes to Northam to undergo a secondary test, which is taking up hours of police time.

But new portable machines will test for methamphetamine and cannabis with 95 per cent accuracy.

Acting Sergeant Wolfe said the new machines will save police hours of work.

"We'll be able to put more time into policing the community rather than driving to and from drug tests," he said.

According to the Road Safety Commission, 37 per cent of road fatalities involve drug affected drivers.

Local police regularly conduct random drug stops and operations across the wheatbelt.
