A brand new monster truck show, featuring a bitter rivalry between good and evil, is visiting Northam Speedway on Saturday, November 4.
The Great Monster Showdown - The West Australian Triple Header Series of Destruction will also visit Kalgoorlie and the HBF Arena on its WA tour.
Co-organiser and professional monster truck driver Troy Garcia said this is a one-of-a-kind event for the industry.
“Adam Brand and myself have organised the show, which is a totally new concept for monster truck events,” he said.
“Normally trucks compete against each other one-on-one but this show has a fun story line, that is choreographed and has a theme.
“It gives the audiences something to follow and get excited about while they are watching.
We all say it in the industry – it is the best job in the world
- Professional monster truck driver Troy Garcia
“We wanted to give it character!”
Garcia said the show will have rangers and pirates, in a good versus evil rivalry.
“It will let the audience pick a side, and hopefully be really entertaining,” he said.
Garcia, based on the Gold Coast, said he got involved with racing at a young age.
“My father raced speedway and it kind of just followed through the family,” he said.
“My mum used to always say, ‘Stop working on cars or you will never get a girlfriend!’
“But I started racing cars and motorbikes and then moved to stunt work.
“I suppose it is an industry where once it is engrained in you – you are in it for a lifetime.”
A speedway promoter asked Garcia in the early 90’s if he would be interested in racing for him as a monster truck driver, and the rest is history.
“I guess he could tell I was fearless but a safety conscious driver, which is a hard combo to find,” he said.
Garcia will be racing at the Northam Speedway, and warned the sport might look unsafe, but is quite the opposite.
“There is a danger element involved, but you wear a lot of safety equipment and you are actually very safe,” he said.
Garcia said he has the greatest job in the world.
“I have kids waving and smiling at me and I get to drive around a massive truck in front of large crowds of people,” he said.
“We all say it in the industry – it is the best job in the world.”
