A 24-year-old Bakers Hill musician left on Tuesday to Israel, to take part in the centenary celebrations of the Light Horse Charge at Beersheba.
Jake James-Tainsh is part of the Perth Hills and Wheatbelt Band, started by music teachers Phil Robertson and Peter Hinds in 2007.
The brass band is made up of students and young people from the Avon Valley and wheatbelt.
The trombone player is the only original member left from when the band and has toured with the students to China, Hawaii, Turkey, Holland, Germany, Belgium, France and England. Jake said they have had full-day rehearsals in anticipation for the trip.
“We usually only practice once a month,” he said. Jake said trombone is a fun instrument to play. “You’re not stuck to one type of music,” he said.
He also dabbles in other instruments including the piano. Jake said he is looking forward to next year when he will be travelling with the band to New York, to play at Carnegie Hall.
