The Northam Chamber of Commerce has launched a new promotion to encourage people to shop in Northam and support local business.
The campaign was put forward by Avon Valley Best Business Person of the Year 2017 winner Andrew Quin from Quin’s Butchers.
The campaign name Be Local, Buy Local was created by Northam Chamber of Commerce member Esther Bliss, who won the online competition to create an appropriate slogan.
Ms Bliss won $200 for her catchy phrase which was branded on t-shirts promoting the initiative.
A Chamber of Commerce spokesperson said the campaign aims to keep money in the town.
“Share the love and money locally so it has a flow on effect to benefit all of the small businesses who put so much back into the community,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson said the chamber is encouraging businesses to purchase shirts and wear them each Friday in support of the campaign.

Businesses who have purchased shirts and are already wearing their shirts are the Shire of Northam, Sportspower Northam, Café Yasou, Northam Nursery, the Avon Community Development Foundation, Studio Luxe, the Northam Bendigo Agency, the Countrywide Group and Quin’s Gourmet Butchers.
This will lead into the Chamber’s Christmas Promotion and the one day all-in-one-spot shopping extravaganza of Christmas on Fitzgerald on Friday December 8, 2017.
Chamber of Commerce president Paul Tomlinson said the promotion is a great initiative and has an important message.
“It has certainly been very well received we are delighted,” Mr Tomlinson said. “It gives us the opportunity to demonstrate unity within the Northam Shire,” he said.
“There is a groundswell of positive feeling in Northam following the recent developments and this goes about reinforcing that.”
Mr Tomlinson said keeping business in the Shire is a team effort. "It involves the business community as well as consumers,” he said.
Mr Tomlinson said the Christmas on Fitzgerald event is coming up soon, which is another event to promote the message of buying local and supporting local retailers.
