FROM September 13-15 it was the Wheatbelt Play Cricket week campaign.
Regional cricket manager Melinda Lucas put together a schedule for herself and other WACA staff Brodie Green and Steve Philippe to visit seven schools in three days, as well as two town’s Milo programs come-and-try days.
On the first day we went to Avon Vale Primary School and did a whole school assembly as well as three class visits.
Then we drove over to Toodyay District High School to do a clinic with the Year 6’s for an hour. Then it was back over to Northam for another assembly with the whole West Northam school and a chance for some photos.
Day two was an early start, heading to Dowerin DHS for the morning, having a clinic with the 5/6’s. Then we drove to Wyalkatchem where Steve, Daniel and Melinda met Brodie with the Perth Scorchers bus which had just arrived from being in Kalgoorlie. We got to Wylie DHS and brought out Blaze the mascot for a lunch special with games and music, followed by two clinics with the Year 2’s and 4-6’s.
That afternoon was the Northam Milo In2 Cricket and Milo T20 Blast Centre promotions with a come-and-try day for all the kids at Bert Hawke oval. We had about 50 kids turn up for the fun afternoon with the Perth Scorchers mascots, Amber and Blaze, the Perth Scorchers bus and inflatable net. We were also lucky to have the Perth Scorchers regional partner CSBP put on a free barbecue for everyone.
Friday morning on the road again to York DHS, where we were treated to a great sport hero’s day assembly. Had a clinic with the Year 2’s followed by recess where Blaze made an appearance again for the kids, who challenged him to a dance off, where the macarena was a sure winner. Then it was back to Northam where we stopped in at Northam SHS to see the Year 7 boys for an hour clinic inside the gym.
After taking some happy snaps of Blaze near the Northam Weir, the bus made its way to Toodyay for our final stop. The Toodyay Milo In2 Cricket and Milo T20 Blast Centre promotions with a come-and-try day for all the kids at the Toodyay Town oval. We again were lucky to have Blaze and Amber making an appearance for the 40 odd kids who turned out, and who also got to enjoy another free barbecue provided by CSBP.
Overall I think it was a great week to get out there and see the kid’s faces when they play cricket, after all that’s what the whole week is for.
