Living and working in regional communities means there are always community events that are raising money and/or awareness of causes that need our support.
And there are a few events at the moment that are worth highlighting.
Last week the Asbestos Disease Society of Australia (ADSA) hosted its Walk for Research and Awareness 2017.
The trek started in Merredin and made its way to Perth via Bruce Rock, Quairading, Beverley, York and Northam.
For more than 35 years ASDA has provided support to people and their families living with asbestos.
The disease affects people from all part of the community and in 2016 ADSA recorded 300 asbestos-related deaths – in my books that’s 300 too many.
This Saturday and Sunday, West Moto Park, a popular off-road bike facility near Wyalkatchem, is turning pink for its first Pink Ribbon event – raising funds for breast cancer research and support.
Money raised will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation which is the leading organisation in community-funded breast cancer research.
One in eight Australian woman die of breast cancer each day.
West Moto Park marketing manager Katy Bacon said everyone knew someone who had breast cancer.
“We’re turning pink at West Moto Park to help find an end to this disease.”
If you are looking for an off-road bike adventure this long weekend, then maybe Wylie is the place to be.
Another event is the 2017 Wine and Horses Charity Ride that will be held on Saturday, October 7 and Sunday, October 8, supporting Alzheimer’s WA.
Wine & Horses has raised more than $70,000 over the past three years for Alzheimer’s WA and this year organisers have their sights set on raising $50,000.
Riders will start their journey from either Woorooloo (50km ride each day) or Avon Brook Winery (25km ride each day) and ride to an overnight camp at the Avon Valley Equestrian Centre.
The public is invited to cheer on the riders along Broome Terrace on the Saturday from 1.30-3.30pm. A fundraiser will be held on the Saturday night with some great prizes up for grabs.
These are three of many great local community events and if you can help support any of them, organisers will appreciate it.
