LAST Saturday was the start of one of the major weekends in the Northam golfing calendar, with the running of the Northam open weekend, commencing with a four-ball-better-ball competition on Saturday and the Kennedy Cup on the Sunday.
The weekend’s events were sponsored by Countrywide Group, Northam HMS/Trusty Sheds, WFI, Focused Tax Solutions and the Shire of Northam.
Four-ball-better-ball event
Saturday’s event was a four-ball-better-ball event which gives the visiting players a chance to look at the course before the Kennedy Cup, and provides the locals a chance to do some last minute fine tuning to their game.
The event requires a strong consistent performance from both players in order to have a score that will be up with the leaders at the end of the day.
At the end of the day, as the last players straggled into the club house it was obvious there had been some very strong performances on the course.
With a great score of 46 points it was the local team of Peter Beazley and Mike O’Shea who took out the event on a countback from the Bakers Hill pair of Peter Toovey and Glen Miller. Third with a score of 45 points were Steve Dinka and Mick Wladyka who beat Kevin Smith and Ray Wiktorski on a countback .
Gross winners were Daniel Negus and Lew Cutmore. Ladies winners with 43 points were Leslie McPherson and Shirley Smyth; runners-up with 39 points were Wendy Richards and Stephanie Hubble.

A large field of 50 players were out in cool conditions early Sunday morning to challenge for the right to hold this prestigious cup above their head on the winners podium later that evening.
Twenty-seven holes of par will challenge all golfers, a lapse in concentration will see a positive score slip into the negatives very quickly.
A small group of players didn’t seem to be phased on the day returning some strong scores; none better that Nathan Smith from Goomalling, with an overall score of +9, Smith took out the Kennedy Cup for 2017.
