Northam Shire Council voted 8-0 to commence the development of a new outdoor 50 metre swimming pool facility following the announcement the project would acquire a $3.2 million government grant.
The project received $1.5 million from the WA Government’s Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund in January and a further $3.2 million through the Building Better Regions Fund on August 4, 2017.
This prompted Shire officers to recommend that the project proceed immediately because it is in a financial position to do so and to avoid any delays.
On Wednesday, Council voted to amend the overall budget for the project from $3.8 million to $8 million and therefore increase the Shire loan from $1 million to $2.3 million.
The facility will be located near the Northam Recreation Centre where the Jubilee Pavilion resides on Henry Street oval.
Shire president Steven Pollard recently said he hoped the pool would be ready by the 2018/2019 summer holidays.
