In exciting news for coin collectors, Woolworths stores have begun distributing colourful new $2 coins.
The coins are emblazoned with characters from Mem Fox’s Australian children’s book Possum Magic.
The coins, a limited edition release from the Royal Australian Mint, are now in circulation in Woolworths tills.
The first coin, featuring the book’s main character – Hush, has been released, with two other coins to go into circulation on August 22 and August 29.
A limited edition Possum Magic coin collection will also be available at the supermarket chain while stocks last.
The collection features all three $2 coin designs, four different $1 coin designs and a unique one cent coin, specially designed by Possum Magic illustrator Julie Vivas.
Woolworths Northam store manager Clare Rogers said she is pleased with the initiative.
“The multi-generational appeal of this number one best selling children’s book, along with the story’s inclusion of truly Australian food, connects with families in a unique way,” she said.
“We hope the release of the coin collection provides more opportunities for Avon Valley grandparents, parents and children alike to engage with this iconic story and perhaps even try recreating the famous dishes contained in the book.”
Royal Australian Mint chief executive officer Mr Ross MacDiarmid said they are thrilled to be able to immortalise the story for generations to come through this collector coin series.
“Keep a look out for the limited edition ‘magic coins’ in your change when you shop at Woolworths Northam,” he said.
“Finding and keeping these coins will give you a taste of coin collecting, one of the oldest and most popular hobbies in the world.”
Possum Magic author Mem Fox said no one can imagine her level of excitement.
“Nothing could be more magical than turning Possum Magic from a book into a collection of coins,” she said.
“I’m dizzy with amazement, and honestly, overcome with gratitude that my beloved story is being immortalised in this way.”
