Three local organisations have been nominated into the 2017 WA Regional Achievement and Community Awards.
The purpose of the awards is to encourage, acknowledge and reward the valuable contributions individuals, communities and businesses are making throughout regional and rural Western Australia.
The Northam Senior Citizens Club have been nominated for the Insurance Commission of Western Australia Regional Safety Award.
The club has been nominated for displaying road safety signage on their bus.
Northam Senior Citizens Club member Barb Browning said road users are more courteous to the group due to the safety signage.
“Definitely all clubs using buses should have signage with road safety message for safety reasons,” she said.
The Shire of Northam RoadWise Committee were nominated for their Driving Change Easter Campaign based on the State Road safety Strategy 2008-20.
The road safety campaign consisted of five topics over five weeks in the Easter period.
Each topic was voiced by a local identity, talking about a subject they were heavily involved with.
Volunteers from the community involved an emergency services volunteer, a serious crash survivor, vehicle fleet manager and a police officer in charge.
This campaign was conducted with minimal funding, and received significant reach in the Avon valley community.
And lastly, Wheatbelt NRM from Northam has been nominated for the LandCorp Sustainability Award.
The nomination said Wheatbelt NRM is committed to taking care of the region’s natural resources, by working with communities to conduct environmentally sustainable activities such as revegetation, salinity management and feral control.
They conduct valuable environmental work and provide employment for local Aboriginals, assisting them to incorporate their culture and beliefs within the wheatbelt, the nomination said.
Finalists will be presented and winners announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner on October 20, 2017.
