An excited active club mimicked the Avon Descent last week, with their own paddling race that started from the Northam weir on August 8, 2017.
The Over 55 Canoe Club followed the river down to Wetheral Reserve in Toodyay.
When they set off from the weir, the temperature was freezing, but the attitudes of the participants could not have been brighter.
Over 55 Club president Kate Petty said the event ran for three days.
“We will be travelling 15-17 kilometres every day,” she said.
Kate said the river is open to everyone and a permit is not required.
“Provided you do not travel through the restricted area of the Avon Valley,” she said.
The group did a similar race last year, starting at Katrine Bridge and travelling through to Weatherall Reserve.
“Three of us did 60 kilometres last year,” said Kate. “So this year we thought we would bring along whoever else wanted to come.”
“We love kayaking and moving water.”
The club is made up of 75 members from around Perth, and a few from the Avon Valley.
“Sue and Jim Simcock live in Northam,” said Kate. “They are some of the original members.
“The majority of people have been in the club for around 30 years!”
