A 25-year-old appeared in the Northam Courthouse on Monday, after falling asleep behind the wheel and driving through the Avon Bridge construction barricade at lunchtime, while workers were present.
Sergeant Phil Milne said the car went through the barricade and over the bridge, only to stop when it ran out of momentum at the roundabout on Wellington Street.
He said it was lucky nobody was injured during the incident that occurred on December 16, 2016.
Liam Edward O’Sullivan pleaded guilty to reckless driving and driving a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs.
Sgt Milne said O’Sullivan had a cocktail of drugs in his system at the time, including meth and prescription drugs.
The Northam man, who represented himself, said he suffered from schizophrenia and receives a disability pension.
The court was told O’Sullivan attends Hollyoake and mental health services.
Magistrate Jennifer Hawkins disqualified his licence for 30 months.
He was also put on a community based order for seven months and was fined $1860.
