Grass Valley artist Otto Hampel was approached by the Northam Theatre Group to create a piece of original artwork for the Link Theatre.
The artwork will be unveiled to the public this Saturday at 5pm, outside the building.
Otto said he was given creative freedom to make what he desired.
“They couldn’t tell me what they wanted so they left it entirely up to me,” he said.
The piece is gold in colour, shaped like a globe and has a striking appearance.
A wooden bench surrounds the central globe, that can rotate.
The 73-year-old said he worked around the idea ‘what is theatre’ and started with the concept of the whole world being a stage.
The globe is sliced into three parts that each represent theatre, being drama and comedy, music and dance.
Otto said the gold colour represents the wheatbelt.
He said a special piece of the artwork for him, was a bit of history he included.
“I got these tines from the Byfield family,” he said. “I was able to include them in this sculpture. “The Byfield name goes right back to when the Northam Theatre Group started – when we bought the theatre as a church.
“It pleases me to personally be able to relate this to the history of the theatre group.”
Otto said he is happy he could incorporate all the ideas of theatre in the piece.
“It has got to be glitzy and razzmatazzy, without being glitzy and razzmatazzy,” he said. “I think I have achieved it.”
The piece is a donation from Otto, with all the materials supplied by the theatre group.
The 73-year-old has been a part of the Northam Theatre Group since he was 19.
“A good fifty three years,” he said.
“That was when we opted to move from the Town Hall and buy the church.”
The ex-teacher uses only recycled materials in his artwork.
“I do sculptures with horse shoes,” he said. “I try to get rid of stuff off my place!”
He said he started working with horse shoes because he owned horses.
One of his large swan sculptures made out of horseshoes, resides at Swan Hill on Jennapullin Road.
Otto will be holding a fundraiser on September 24 at his home, to raise funds for the Cancer Council Australia. The artist was recently diagnosed with cancer himself, and would like to help fundraise for the cause where he can.
