LAST weekend’s golf started on the Friday with the MJW Mitsubishi Electric open two-person ambrose event, then followed by the Corolin Cup a stroke event over two days.
The two-person ambrose kicked off with numerous teams of varying abilities, some pairings would blow hot and cold others saw their ambitions evaporate before the halfway mark.
At the end of the day the pairing of Daniel Negus and Rhys Byfield were too strong and took out the winners trophy.
Runners-up were Ron Pitts and Terry Lawler. Best mixed pair Phil and Jenny Becker. Gross winners Neil James and Don Bates.
NOVELTIES:
No. 1 placement drive Terry Lawler; Best third shot No. 3 Matt Woods and Brad Parker; No. 5 longest ladies drive Jenny Becker; No. 8 best second shot Matt Woods and Brad Parker; No 11 long putt Chadd Hunt and Lindsay Kelly; No. 12 nearest the pin Terry Lawler; No. 14 nearest the pin Brian Thomson; No. 16 longest drive Kevin Smith; No. 18 best third shot Kevin Smith and Michael Spadaccini.
Saturday morning, round one of the Corolin Cup, 18 players out in wet and windy conditions hoping that a good round would have them in the best position to make a charge for the cup on day two.
Fresh from sponsoring the ambrose the day before, Matt Woods played the course as if it was a dry calm day, coming in with a nett 67 to lead the pack by four strokes. Best of the rest Kevin Smith, Andrew Quin and Terry Lawler a few shots behind.
NOVELTIES:
No. 6 nearest the pin Matt Woods; No. 9 nearest the pin Brad Parker; No. 11 best second shot Peter Roe; No. 15 best third shot Ollie Griffiths.
Sunday round two all the pressure was on Woods; would he suffer from second round syndrome? A common occurrence in two-day events, lead day one, crash and burn day two. Lawler and Smith again put in commendable attempts to reign in the leader but Woods was too good coming in with a nett 72 a total of 139 to win the Corolin Cup for 2017.
Runners-up was Terry Lawler with a credible 144, beating Kevin Smith on a countback. Saturday winner Kevin Smith; Saturday runner-up Brad Parker; Sunday winner Rob Lucy; Sunday runner-up Chadd Hunt.
NOVELTIES:
No. 2 best second shot Matt Woods; No. 5 best third shot Kevin Smith; No. 18 best third shot Kevin Smith.
