Wheatbelt Department of Fire and Emergency Services held a management training exercise for three officers in York, by replicating the protocol that would be undertaken in a real life emergency response situation.
Shane Klunder, Martin Cable and Andy Spry were tested by Perth officers during Exercise Balladong.
Passing the tests would give the officers higher responsibilities for future emergency situations.
The Incident Support Group was made up of department representatives from Western Power, York Hospital, ranger services, local police, Child Protection, and Parks and Wildlife.
During the exercise, the volunteers reenacted how their department would respond to an active wheatbelt fire, threatening homes.
Mortlock area officer Shane Klunder said the pressure of the exercise was “unreal”.
“This is something we should be exposing ourselves to when we have the opportunity,” he said.
“It really brings up the nerves – but as soon as you manage them you become a better operator.”
He said he especially noticed the impact distance and time have on decision making.
Mr Klunder said the exercise was a benefit to community members that would be involved in an incident support group during an emergency.
“If you go to one or two practice runs, it really has a benefit,” he said.
The officers will know later this month if they passed the exercise.
