After a disappointing loss for the Federals league side last week, injuries to key players and four weeks since our last home game, a very tough encounter was predicted against the Cunderdin Magpies at Northam.
This week’s set of fixtures was the Belt - Up Round and it’s a friendly reminder for all players and sports followers within the Avon region to take responsibility as the driver to ensure yourself and all passengers wear their seat belts.
Congratulations are in order for Lachie Dunkerton reaching his first milestone of 50 games for the club a great effort and big future ahead of this talented player.
The reserves game played under windy and wet ground conditions from overnight rain set the tone for the match, with most players from both teams finding it hard to stay on their feet.
This turned the game into a bogged affair with both sides finding it difficult to capitalise on their forward entries with inaccurate shots at goal scoring multiple points.
With both teams giving their all, Federals eventually gained the upper hand managing to score a few vital goals and holding off a fast finishing Cunderdin side to run out eventual winners by 17 points.
Federals scored 7/9 /51 points to Cunderdin’s 4/10/34 points.
The league game started in similar fashion as the reserves and again both sides found the conditions difficult to handle.
However, as the game progressed Federals seemed to have more desire and run in their legs which enabled the midfield, ably led by a winning ruckman in Michael Goggin, to push the ball forward and create many scoring opportunities.
At the three-quarter time break with Federals leading by 66 points, coach Alistair Smith encouraged his charges to continue with their close checking and hard at the ball attitude.
This was answered by all players with Federals coming out winners 19/11/125 points to Cunderdin 5/12/42 points.
The netball girls came up against a tall and talented Cunderdin side and unfortunately were unable to match them in the height department which is a big advantage in a game of netball.
Cunderdin won the game 55 goals to Federals’ 31 goals.
