A series of medical emergencies, including snakebites, near drownings, motorbike and equipment accidents befell residents in Moora recently – but it wasn’t a series of unfortunate events.
It was part of the annual Go Rural event, giving final year WA university medical, nursing and allied health students the opportunity to experience the diversity of a rural lifestyle and the benefits of a rural career.
During the three-day rural program the students toured the Moora Hospital, took part in medical scenarios led by rural GPs, attended skills sessions, visited a local farm and met members of the Moora community during a sundowner at the Moora Shire.
Rural Health West general manager for workforce Kelli Porter said Go Rural was an excellent opportunity to showcase the benefits of rural medicine and health to the students.
“We know that students who have grown up in the country are more likely to return to the country when they graduate,” she said.
