A Perth man has set off on a gruelling, solo marathon bike ride across the nation.
Bernie Durkin is currently stopping across the wheatbelt on his solo cycling journey from Perth to Sydney to promote the importance of keeping Australia safe.
The 55-year-old left from Scarborough Beach on Friday and arrived at his first stop Northam on Saturday.
He then travelled to Kellerberrin, Merredin, Bodallin, Boorabbin and will be arriving in Coolgardie on Wednesday.
Bernie is hoping to arrive at his final destination, Bondi, by April 8, 2017.
Bernie Durkin is the president of Neighbourhood Watch Australasia, executive manager of community engagement for WA Police and director of the state-wide Neighbourhood Watch program.
A passion for cycling and community safety is what has driven Bernie Durkin to undertake the biggest personal challenge of his life.
Bernie has volunteered to put his body on the line, to promote an online safety app NHWConnect.
The app is a digital, community lead safety and awareness program, run by everyday people in their immediate communities.
Bernie hopes the six-week awareness campaign will encourage everyday Aussies to take advantage of the app in their local communities and to share their views and concerns via the internet.
Bernie is riding solo, with no support vehicle and only a small bike trailer of supplies.
He is hoping that friendly road users will assist him by providing him with some water or supplies if he finds himself short of either.
