This past weekend saw the Wheatbelt fraught with bushfires all over the region including Ballidu, Dalwallinu, Toodyay, Goomalling, Bruce Rock and Muresk.
Department of Fire and Emergency Services Avon Region district manager Mark Bowen said this meant volunteer firefighters were out in full force on every occasion, sometimes going from one fire to the next.
”The volunteers did a great job,” he said.
“We had some volunteers go to Goomalling then to Toodyay then straight to little fires in Northam...then Sunday back to the fires at Muresk.
“They definitely put in a lot of hours over the past weekend and they should be commended.”
Around 30 farmer response vehicles from Grass Valley, Clackline and Bakers Hill and local fire brigade units from York and Toodyay attended the fire on Rogers Road in Muresk on Sunday.
The fire started at around 5.40pm when Philip Lloyd was harvesting his crops in a header and noticed smoke coming from the back of the vehicle.
The vehicle set light to the crops quickly due to the hot weather and strong wind.
The fire burnt through one tractor, but luckily missed two others and the three grain bins on the property.
More than 90 volunteers in total gave their time to help control this blaze. Mr Lloyd's partner Wendy Diamond said the volunteer response was phenomenal. I am so pleased I live in a rural community where people work so hard to help,” she said.
