Northam man Jermaine Davis has been selected as the 2016 Flying Boomerangs coach.
The AFL-run program involves football, educational and leadership training for indigenous boys under 15 years of age.
The children involved are exposed to the best coaching and mentoring, as well as personal development opportunities.
Only 25 boys were picked from across Australia with 10 from Western Australia and three from the wheatbelt including Kaije Slater and Ashley Colbung from Northam and Liam Henry from Tammin.
On Sunday the team flew to China where they will play football against an AFL China team and Port Adelaide Academy team, as well as having the opportunity to explore different cities including Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing for the Great Wall of China and Forbidden City tour.
The Northam man is the first Western Australian to coach the team since its formation 10 years ago.
“I think the program is fantastic for the boys, to get them out of their comfort zone and into a different environment” said Davis.
“We lose a lot of kids in this town through alcohol and drugs but these kids can break that stigma and move on.”
