A power pole caught fire on the main street in Northam today causing a moment of chaos on a usually quiet Tuesday morning.
A Western Power spokesperson said they received a call around 10.20am from a bystander who said a pole was on fire in front of the Commonwealth bank on Fitzgerald Street.
The street filled with onlookers watching the pole, that was sparking loudly and releasing dark smoke and ash.
Many people in vehicles were unaware of the fire, and continued to drive underneath the blaze.
A Northam Fire and Rescue truck arrived on the scene around 10.30am along with Police soon after who closed the road to vehicles.
The electricity in town went out around 10.40am for approximately four hours.
The Western Power spokesperson said they did not know how the fire started as of yet, and are awaiting further details.
