Four members from the Albany Lions Club stopped off in Northam last week, while on their world record attempt to travel around Australia on a motorcycle while towing a boat to raise money for Diabetes Research.
The group left from Albany on April 30 and are on the last leg of their seven month trip which is the second time the club has completed the journey, the first being back in 2014.
The four Albany Lions members on the journey are president Guy Cook, team leader Glen Hurst, support vehicle driver Marina Ruranga and registered nurse Eric Maujean.
The group raised funds at different locations in Northam on their stop over, including outside Woolworths and the Riverside Hotel. The Lions Club of Northam welcomed their fellow members with open arms and held a special meeting for the travellers on Tuesday October 18.
Team leader Glen Hurst addressed the meeting by showing the audience a video of their travels and presented Northam Lions president Harry Taylor with a certificate of appreciation.
Several members donated to the cause and a small memorabilia of the hummingbird was given to those who did. Lions Club member El Rewell said it was a special night for the club.
“Each Lion Club throughout Western Australia are behind this great project originated by Glen and his crew,” she said.
The team continued their expedition the following day, travelling to Moora Lions club.
The group have been documenting their travels on Facebook, and recording videos of each stop over in order to make a documentary at the completion of the experience.
Team Leader Glen Cook said the aim of the trip is to raise money and public awareness for the the Diabetes Foundation. “Presently there are more than 385 million people living with diabetes, and it is expected that in less than 25 years this will reach 592 million people,” he said.
“If the cure can be found the relief to the health system will be significant.”
