Two employees from Commercial Building Services (CBS) were left rattled on the side of the road on Thursday, after their work truck burst into flames.
Brodey Pearce and Lachlan Angwin had completed a job at the Muresk Institute at 11.30am and were returning to the CBS office in Cockburn when they began to smell smoke in the truck.
“We were driving along the road and we could smell smoke, but we just thought there was a fire somewhere in the bush,” said Brodey Pearce.
“A minute later it was getting stronger and we turned around and saw the blankets and insulation had caught on fire so we quickly pulled over.
The boys jumped out of the truck and attempted to distinguish the flames.
“We jumped out and we couldn’t do anything – we couldn’t pull the blankets off either,” explained Lachlan.
“I poured two bottles of water on it to see if that would help.
“The flames were about 30 centimeters at the start and then I put the water on it – and they just went off.”
Lachlan said the truck straps were containing the insulation to one area of vehicle and when they incinerated, the whole vehicle quickly set alight.
“We stood as far away away as we could so we were safe and called the fire station,” he said.
He said around 15 minutes later, two ambulances from Northam Fire and Rescue arrived and extinguished the blaze.
The boys did not have any injuries and did not require ambulance assistance.
