The Wine & Horses Charity Ride has eclipsed its 2015 total raising more than $40,000 for people living with dementia.
On the last leg, approximately 65 horses and riders rode down Fitzgerald street after following the CY O'Connor Pipeline trail and Kep Track return to Northam on Saturday October 15 and 16, 2016.
Alzheimer’s Australia WA CEO Rhonda Parker said the event, organised by Wine and Horses owner Maryanne Phillips, was likely to be WA’s best single fundraising event for the year.
“Maryanne Phillips is just an amazing person for the huge amount of time and energy she puts into this event each year,” Ms Parker said.
“We could not operate all services for people with dementia without such a charitable spirit.
“The riders and the kind people of the region should be applauded for their selflessness in fundraising and donating to help others.
“Alzheimer’s Australia WA are indebted to all the people from far and wide who made this event such a huge success.
“It really shows a region that cares.”
Ms Phillips said she is overjoyed with the successful fundraiser this year.
“It was exciting to see so many local residents come out of their houses Saturday and Sunday to cheer the horses as they rode through the town along Broome Terrace,” she said.
“Last year we raised over $23,000 and this year we are still counting but are very excited to have raised approximately $45,000.
“This event commenced in 2014, and is growing in popularity with riders, volunteers and sponsors as well.
Maryanne said during the ride this year, participants shared stories about family members and friends that have been affected by Alzheimer's.
She said the they also participated in social training rides and other activities before the big event.
Riders commenced the trail from either Wooroloo (100 km return), or Clackline (50km return) and rode through private property, and bridal trails.
Riders, family and friends camped at the Avon Valley Equestrian Centre in Northam where the annual fundraising auction was held.
Riders from all ages participated, the youngest being only 7-years-old.
Work has already begun behind the scenes planning the 2017 event.
