BE aware. There are morons living in the local community.
That might sound a bit harsh but when you look at the evidence, that is compelling, it is hard to argue against the above statement.
The story on page 2 of today’s Avon Valley and Wheatbelt Advocate highlights our case.
Who in their right mind would so viciously attack a public amenity such as the community swimming pool in Wundowie?
The people who have done this act should be named and shamed, and if they are adults and local police catch up with them, that’s exactly what this paper will do.
We do suspect however, that it is the act of children as we hope that any reasonable adult would not contemplate such as criminal act.
It is time to take a stand and humiliate people who think it is their right to go about their lives in this manner.
Everyone in the wider Wundowie community who has used this pool in the past, and intends to use it in the future, should be angry.
The damage is not an easy fix.
It is something that the Shire of Northam has not budgeted for but now must find the money to repair.
It is both costly and timely and there’s a fair chance that the pool will not be open in time for the upcoming summer.
This will be a burden on the community in coping through the summer without a local pool.
It is easy to say that most of the damage will be covered by insurance but local authorities like the Shire of Northam will have to pay for this through increase insurance premiums – this will ultimately be passed onto local ratepayers.
Swimming pools in country towns are run as a community service – not as a profit-driven concern, so it is not unreasonable to suggest that at some time in the future, facilities like this may not be available.
People who use these facilities will then be the ones who will suffer, probably more than the fools who thought it was cool to spray paint and chemicals everywhere and smash up parts of the structure.
It is important as a community to help out and notify someone if you see something not right.
If you hear anything about who might have been involved in this criminal activity – do the right thing and contact local police.
Only then can they stop incidents like this happening again in the future.
