WUNDOWIE residents were out in force in the town and at El Caballo Resort recently, participating in workshops to help develop the Wundowie Community Plan 2016-2026.
The workshops were the third and final consultative tool used by the Shire of Northam to gather data on how residents feel about the locality they live in and what their aspirations are for development over the next 10 years.
Three groups totalling more than 50 people considered the region’s strengths and opportunities under the areas of the local economy, services, liveability/community and infrastructure.
Summaries of findings from 350 comments on the Wundowie Wishing Tree and 120 community surveys were presented, providing base data from a wide cross section of the community.
The workshops identified that Wundowie has a lot of great infrastructure, services and a good sense of community spirit.
The economy was recognised as being influenced by local shops and several corporate entities both within and adjacent to, Wundowie.
The areas considered for development in the opportunities section included improved service delivery in policing and health, development of a sporting/recreational hub, tourism, footpaths and walk trails, a café and improved communication at the local level such as local newsletters, websites, social events etc.
Northam Shire president Steven Pollard attended one of the sessions.
“The workshops were successful in bringing together long-term residents, people from the newly established Mauravillo Estate, as well as residents of El Caballo Lifestyle village and subdivision.
“It was great see how strategic the different groups are in what they want for the region.
“I do not doubt that Council will be better informed on community aspirations as a result of this process.”
The Shire of Northam is now collating the results of the community consultation and developing the plan.
The draft plan will be taken back to the community for final endorsement before its final presentation to Council.
The Wundowie Community Plan 2016 -2026 seeks to bring together residents, community groups, local business and industry, service providers and government to create partnerships to realise a strong and vibrant future for Wundowie.
It aims to; encourage diverse investment in the region, inform infrastructure, planning and investment decisions, and maximise outcomes.
