NORTHAM’S Bernard Park drainage basin will undergo a major facelift to attract swans and people to the Minson Avenue park.
Shire of Northam chief executive officer Jason Whiteaker said the project would improve the operation of the town’s drainage system and improve the park’s overall amenity.
He said flooding of Minson Avenue had been an issue and was perceived to be impacting potential development in the area.
“The current Swan enclosure is very prominent in the park so some of the work being undertaken will improve the general aesthetic appeal of the area, whilst also bringing an opportunity and focus for people to interact with the area more closely,” he said.
The redevelopment was highlighted in the Bernard Park master plan. It includes other developments such as the water playground.
The basin will be drained and dug out to remove built-up sediment and adjustments will be made to improve water levels.
A new levee wall with a spillway will be built.
Viewing platforms, footpaths and extra park furniture are being installed to increase access and functionality of the space. Fencing surrounding the swan enclosure will be replaced to create a more appealing public open space with improved amenities for park users and local wildlife.
During this time the swans will be monitored by the Shire rangers to ensure their safety during the works. Parts of the park next to the swan enclosure will be closed while works are ongoing.
