WORK on the redevelopment of the Bernard Park ‘Swan Enclosure’ is due to commence in early July 2016.
The Shire of Northam awarded the tender to Australian Civils, who are currently working with Shire of Northam staff to finalise the details of the projects prior to work commencing.
The works at the Bernard Park Swan Enclosure have two main objectives, firstly the works will assist in relieving some of the water/flooding issues in and around the CBD, particularly Minson Avenue, whilst there will also be an aesthetic outcome associated with the works.
The Shire of Northam have been doing considerable works around the Minson Avenue area in relation to drainage with the swan enclosure works forming the final current stage of these works.
Shire of Northam chief executive Jason Whiteaker said the works being undertaken will add value to the park and CBD area generally.
“Flooding of Minson Avenue has been an issue for some time which is an issue which is perceived to be impacting potential development,” he said.
“The works being undertaken currently will go some way to managing the issues from a drainage perspective.
“The current Swan enclosure is very prominent in the park so some of the work being undertaken will improve the general aesthetic appeal of the area, whilst also brining an opportunity and focus for people to interact with the area more closely."
Mr Whiteaker said the works would include viewing platforms, rock pitching and plantings, whilst the current fencing will be removed and replaced with a more appealing and less intrusive fence.
The works will require a significant portion of Bernard Park directly adjacent to the swan enclosure to be closed, as a work site.
Consequently the Shire of Northam is asking residents of Northam to be mindful of this and respect the need for the area to be closed in order to have the works competed in the quickest possible timeframe.
