DEMOLITION has commenced at the old Northam Hospital site.
The proposed development, on the corner of Wellington and Gairdner Streets, will consist of two supermarket stores and significant retail space, including provision for a retail fuel outlet.
Windsor Knight Commercial Property Development owner/developer Greg Pearce said the project is still on track for opening in the second half of 2017.
He said the project had not been delayed, but rather a process was being undertaken.
“We had to build a new mono-tower to accommodate the Optus equipment that is on top of the old hospital,” he said.
“That work is nearing completion.
“In the interim we have commenced demolition of the lower buildings.”
Mr Pearce said as soon as the Optus tower on the main building is turned off and decommissioned, the main building will come down.
“We are thinking that will be in a couple of weeks,” he said. No explosions or implosions will take place.
