STUDENTS from WA College of Agriculture in Cunderdin have added sporting achievements to their list of accolades. College sports coordinator, Paul Jasper, said students were in for a hectic year. Term I saw teams and individuals participate in the Mursell Tennis Shield, Graeme Wood Shield, local men’s basketball competition, a scuba diving course and the autumn carnival.
"We have had some fantastic results for the year so far," Mr Jasper said.
Selection of the teams for the autumn carnival was made by deputy principal Travis Hooper and Mr Jasper, and many members of staff gave up their weekend to support the event, held at Harvey this year. More than 50 students took part in sports from indoor cricket to fishing.
"This carnival, like all school sporting events is mostly about participation but with some healthy rivalry. Cunderdin was runner-up at the carnival winning five out of 14 events. Teams were successful in croquet, cricket, tennis, triathlon and volleyball, an outstanding achievement. I'd like to thank Mr Beatty, Mr Hooper, Mr Childs, Mrs Rudland and Mr Gray for taking the students to the weekend event,” Mr Jasper said.
In the Mursell Shield tennis competition the college sent three boy’s and one girl’s team to the local tennis club to compete against Merredin and Northam Senior High Schools and York District High. Zak Baker (Corrigin), Cody Eva (Brookton), Jayden Fanning (Toodyay) and James Steel (Southern Cross) won the boys competition, as did Aimee Tyson (Goomalling), Acacia Shannon (Yelbini), Vanessa Davis (Northam) and Grace Davey (Wongan Hills) in their division. These teams went to Perth on April 1 to compete in the state finals. The girls were successful in their event and college librarian, Anita Sullivan, was thanked for the support she provided.
A squad of 21 competed in the Graeme Wood Shield cricket competition, with principal Bernard Beatty and farm manager Kim Gray, using the college's bowling machine for training. February 24 saw the team play Eastern Hills Senior High in Perth. In batting James Steel scored highest with 52 runs, while captain Cody Eva scored a solid 27 runs. Bowling figures were Jordan Kelly (Swan View) 2 for 1 and Jordan Osboine (Bolgart) 2 for 27.
