THE Shire of Northam was disappointed to learn that the much celebrated statue of Captain Hugo Vivian Throssell V.C was vandalised recently.
A number of pieces were forcibly removed.
The damage was reported by a Shire worker, and the matter has been reported to Northam Police for further investigation.
The statue was unveiled on April 25, and was the subject of a dedication ceremony on August 29this year to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of Throssell being awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross for service to the country.
The Shire of Northam said although they deeply saddened and disappointed that this vandalism has occurred, they would like to assure residents they recognise it is a small minority disrespecting the property and history of Northam, and it would not deter them from providing attractions and facilities in the future.
