LAST weekend students from Curtin University travelled to Northam for the John Curtin Weekend.
Meeting the group was Peter Weatherley of the Avon Valley Environmental Society, giving the students a demonstration of the Avon River catchment.
The group’s primary task was moving mulch onto Avon River walking trails near Burlong Pool.
The group stayed overnight with Rotarians David and Jan Horseley.
Rotarians also came out to visit the project underway over the weekend.
Matthew Biletic, one of the Curtin University students up for the task, said the mulching was finished quickly.
“We then began planting trees along the river,” he said.
The John Curtin Weekend is co-ordinated by Maureen Meredith and run by volunteers at regional and metropolitan sites.
The majority of the volunteers are Curtin students.
Avon Valley Environmental Society’s Peter Weatherley said up to four to five truckloads of mulch were used for the project.
“Thanks must go to the Shire of Northam, Rotary and the Avon Valley Environmental Society,” he said.
“And thanks to the students - it’s manpower that does it, not machines.”
The weekend also saw Rotarians host a thank you sausage sizzle at the Northam Aero Club to those who helped prepare breakfast for the National Ballooning Championships.
