AT THE beginning of the year, Avon Youth’s Michael Ward was nominated to participate in for a leadership development opportunity.
He was one of the 16 applicants selected out of 29 who applied.
The Emerging Community Leadership Project is delivered by Karrak Consulting on behalf of the Regional Development Commission.
It involves four live-in workshops in four different locations over a six month period.
In between the workshops there is personal coaching as well as small group action-learning sets.
“So far I have attended two of the four workshops, one in York and one in Denmark,” Mr Ward said.
“The third one is at Dryandra, near Narrogin and the final workshop is being held in Manjimup.”
Mr Ward said Avon Youth, MNACE and Wheatbelt Development Commission are supporting him to take on the learning opportunity.
“Some of the learning I have appreciated is dealing with the subject of leadership ‘emergence’,” Mr Ward said.
During the journey the participants has the opportunity to interact with influential local leaders, discuss local leadership challenges, build leadership skills and receive individual and group leadership coaching.
Each participant also has to present a snapshot of their region at the relevant workshop.
“My presentation was an Aboriginal Culture Tour with personal insights and was presented at the first workshop in York,” Mr Ward said.
“I had to design and mark out the tour within the timeframe given and the group gave feedback to help with my learning and development.
“Every participant has to have a project to work on - mine is the Development of Aboriginal Tourism in the Avon Valley region.”
My Ward said his project was well underway with an end goal of completing the process by December.
