NORTHAM’S GDR Civil Contractors had a successful first foray in the Central Wheatbelt Small Business Awards held in Merredin on June 5.
The business, on Old York Road, won the 5-10 employees category.
GDR Civil Contractors’ Graham O’Neil said the business had seven employees.
“In the finals we were competing against three other businesses,” he said.
“We were amazed to win.”
Mr O’Neil said the business put in the nomination form to see how they would fare against others.
“We put a good couple of weeks into the submission and got as close to the mark as possible in terms of answering the questions,” he said.
GDR Civil Contractors is now automatically in the running for the state awards.
“Not many people know we have won,” Mr O’Neil said.
“When I showed my guys the award they were not just proud of the team effort but took photos of the certificate and showed family at home.”
Mr O’Neil said he made a special mention of his staff at the ceremony.
“They’re all good guys,” he said.
“I made special mention of them, especially because they couldn’t make it for the ceremony.”
GDR Civil Contractors is a business more than 12 years old with eight years history in Northam.
It is involved in the construction of many large and some high profile civil infrastructure projects.
“For us this win is important,” Mr O’Neil said.
