AT the 2015 CY O’Connor Institute graduation ceremony many honours were bestowed upon staff and students who excelled in their fields.
But one exceptional success story of the evening was that of Indigenous students recognised at institute, Zoe Smith and Merika Borlini.
Ms Smith and Ms Borlini were both nominated for the CY O’Connor Institute Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year award, sponsored by the Shire of Northam and the CY.O’Connor Institute Governing Council.
Due to the high calibre of both the nominees the judging panel for the institute awards decided to honour both the nominees with the top award.
Panel member and CY O’Connor Institute community relations manager Jenny Bartlett said the panel found it impossible to differentiate between the two nominees, who have both excelled in their courses and continued to impress their employers.
CY O’Connor managing director John Scott said it was a testament to the work ethic of Ms Smith and Ms Borlini and their passion for learning that led to both being presented with the award.
“On behalf of the Governing Council I would like to congratulate Zoe and Merika on their awards,” he said.
“To be nominated for an award is a great privilege, and to impress the panel enough to warrant a double award is a great achievement.
“I wish both Merika and Zoe all the best in the future and I encourage them to continue their training to build on the skills they already have.”
