BOXER Vinnie Caruana has added another title to his name.
On April 10 at Metro City, Northbridge, he knocked out Philippines opponent Arnold Garcia in the first round to claim the IBO Oceania Super Middleweight Title.
It only took Caruana two minutes and 40 seconds to end the bout.
The belt joins his light heavyweight state title which he also claimed at Metro City.
Before making the journey to the Perth venue on April 10, Caruana was given an energetic farewell by the Te Tumu Herenga Waka cultural group at the Northam PCYC.
“They performed the Haka, played the guitar and recited the Lord’s Prayer,” he said.
“It was a special send-off for a special day – it was a honour to stand in front of them because they’re sharing their culture for you.”
Damien Rak, Caruana’s training partner, said he was a future world champion in the making given he had all the necessary requirements.
“Vinnie has natural punching power and dedication, as well as a good team of family and friends surrounding him,” he said.
“And it takes a lot of hard work and belief.”
Caruana thanked his wife Naomi for her commitment to his career.
“It’s not possible without her, I thank her a lot for all her positive support,” he said.
“There is a lot of travelling to Perth – it can be a lonely road but it’s all worth the effort when you achieve the results.
“I also need to thank all my friends, family and supporters who made the trip to my fight, Quins, Concrete by Rossi, Bridgely Church of Christ, Powerlines Plus, Verlinden Power Services and Glenroy Chaff.
“You all helped me and supported me through the night and it’s very much appreciated.”
When preparing for fights, Caruana spars with well-known Western Australian boxer Danny Green.
In preparation for his super middleweight title victory, he underwent altitude chamber training, which sees oxygen levels going to 10.5 per cent.
Caruana underwent 12 three minute rounds in the chamber every Tuesday and Thursday at Body Genius, Northbridge to improve his athletic performance.
In the future, Caruana will defend his IBO title.
He also has his eyes on winning a world title of some sort.
In the meantime, he will be taking time off when he and his wife welcome their next baby on June 10.
Caruana and Rak have teamed up with the Northam PCYC and will be holding boxing sessions at the Northam PCYC on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 5.30-7pm.
A Saturday session will also be held 8.30am.
The aim is to teach youth discipline, respect and a good work ethic and how that can be applied to everyday life.
