POLICE are investigating a serious assault which occurred Friday night outside a licensed premises on Fitzgerald Street, Northam.
At about 9.25pm, two men exited the licensed premises and were confronted by several youths.
A physical altercation erupted and as a result a 33- year-old Northam man suffered serious injuries.
He was taken to Northam Regional Hospital and later flown by Royal Flying Doctor Service to Royal Perth Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition, although considered stable.
The other man, a 39 year old also of Northam, was taken to Northam Regional Hospital and treated for minor injuries and later discharged.
This man is assisting police with their inquiries.
Three men have been arrested and are currently assisting Northam Police with their investigation.
Northam Police officer Ron Daniels said police have spoken to all but one person in relation to the assault.
“It was a very, very nasty incident,” Mr Daniels said.
“The man was knocked down and his fall caused the injury.”
Mr Daniels said police were quite confident charges will be laid.
In other crime related news, there was a burglary on Spencers Brook Road with an offender breaking into a home and stealing a laptop.
“On Sunday there were two stealings,” Mr Daniels said.
“One in the Northam Boulevard with drinks stolen, and another at Caltex with drinks and cigarettes taken.”
Another crime was reported on Sunday with a car window smashed, with a GPS stolen on Newcastle Road.
Mr Daniels said police are looking at focusing on secondary roads.
“We want to change our focus for a bit and see what we can do to help,” Mr Daniels said.
“As well as increase the perception we can be anywhere at any time.”
Northam Police will also be focusing on school speed zones this week to remind local people to slow down.
