THE official soil-turning ceremony was held on March 9 for the start of works on the Goomalling Sport and Community Centre.
The facility has been seven years in the making by the Mortlock Sports Council and the Shire of Goomalling.
Last year the Department of Sport and Recreation approved $450,000 from the Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Fund as well as $520,000 from Lotterywest so the community could start work and appoint an architect to commence the facility master plans.
The Shire of Goomalling’s Royalties to Regions cash has also been allocated to the project.
Goomalling and Districts Community Financial Services Limited is providing the Mortlock Sports Council with a five-year, an interest free loan.
The Goomalling community has pulled together to help raise the remaining cash for the facility together with a major contribution from the shire.
The work in progress involves earthworks and demolition of the old home change rooms.
Volunteers from the community are carting the sand from several pits in the shire donated by local farmers.
Builder BE Projects is working with Site Architecture.
The facility is due for completion in October.
