THE Shire of York council has 21 days to respond to concerns over it's ability to provide good governance.
Local Government Minister Tony Simpson has issued a show cause notice asking why the council should not be suspended for up to six months.
Mr Simpson said the Department of Local Government and Communities began to monitor the situation in September 2014.
"During the monitoring period, a significant number of issues emerged, giving rise to concerns about the council's ability to effectively manage the operations of the shire and to provide good government for the people in its district," he said.
"I have formed the view there is sufficient evidence that it is inappropriate for the Shire of York's council to continue without intervention.
"In accordance with my obligations under the Act, I will decide what action to take after I have received a response from the shire."
The shire was advised of the Minister's intention that council members undertake training in leadership, governance and meeting procedures.
Earlier this year Shire of York chief executive Ray Hooper quit after almost 10 years in the role.
His resignation came after councillors launched a review into his conduct and performance.
Member for Central Wheatbelt Mia Davies said she has been in regular contact with the Minister for Local Government over recent months in relation to the York Council.
"Following on from the announcement this morning I have met with the Minister to understand the process going forward," she said.
"I encourage everyone to remain supportive and understanding, the role of a councillor can be challenging and these are people that have volunteered their time on the behalf of the community."
