IN IDEAL weather conditions last Sunday the Northam and Mortlock junior cricket teams (12s) played at Bert Hawke ground in the first round for the Rutherford Shield, the games being 40 overs a side.
NJCA captain Kirwan MacTaggart won the toss and elected to field.
He got his team off to a great start, taking a wicket of the first ball of the innings, caught by wicketkeeper Elijah Truscott.
This set the tone for the remainder of the inning with solid bowling performance by all bowlers.
The bowlers were well backed in the field with nine of the Mortlock wickets to fall going to hand and one wicket a run out.
Tarkyn Narrier, Harley Corbett and Harry Sargeant all took two wickets each.
Major scorers for Mortlock were Liam McLeay and Oscar Metcalf with seven runs each.
Northam had all the Mortlock batsmen back in the pavilion in 18 overs.
Going out to bat MacTaggart opened with Jordon Kickett and they put on an unbeaten opening stand of 91 in 15 overs.
Both batsmen retired allowing other team members to have a bat.Kirman remained 31 n/o with Jordon 47 n/o coming in again alter in the innings with three balls remaining to see if he could bring up his half century.
Facing the next ball Jordon and Ben Casey scampered through for the required three runs with Jordon being run out next ball.
Other batting performances for Northam were Harrison Sargeant 39 n/o Callum Norrish 10 n/o while bowling for Mortlock Clancy Waugh took two wickets for 12 runs in four overs.
The players should be commended on their sportsmanship as the game was played in great spirit.
