DURING a recent visit to Northam by premier Colin Barnett, four of the Shire of Northam's long serving bush fire volunteers were awarded the National medal.
The National medal was established on February 14, 1975 and recognises volunteers' diligent long service, a minimum of 15 years, in organisations that protect life and property.
Recipients of the medal were Mathew Macqueen, David Russell, Frank Reynolds, and Robert Herzer, who are all members of local fire brigades.
The shire's community emergency services manager John Hansen said recipients were worthy of receiving the medals.
"To do 15 years of service for volunteer fire brigades is no mean feat and is a huge contribution to the community," he said.
Mr Hansen said they were always looking for volunteers for emergency services and the recipients recognised by the premier provide an example of effective and professional service.
