IN JULY, Regional Development Australia (RDA) Wheatbelt Inc. hosted a Youth 20 (Y20) inspired Summit at Joondalup Resort.
The event was modelled on Y20 Australia but focused on addressing challenges at a local (such as the Wheatbelt) rather than global level.
Of the 32 young people who participated in the Y20 Wheatbelt, six were selected to form part of a delegation to present the summit report to local members of parliament at an event held in Northam last week.
Each of the delegates provided a brief presentation covering off on key topics of discussion that emerged from the Y20 Wheatbelt Summit.
These included economic development/industry opportunity, employment and workforce development, education and training, the provision of essential services and social amenity to Wheatbelt communities, what is great about the region now and what needs to be improved and an aspirational vision for the region in 20 years' time.
The event, facilitated by RDA Wheatbelt, was attended by Minister for Water Mia Davies, MLC Darren West and the Member for the Agricultural Regional Paul Brown.
The Y20 Wheatbelt Summit presentation to members of parliament was an opportunity for the inspiring young people to demonstrate their understanding of the issues/barriers that are impeding the growth and development of our region and to provide their insights in to how our current regional leaders can begin to address some of these challenges.
The summit report is available to download from the RDA Wheatbelt website.
