THOUSANDS of Western Australians flocked to Challis Farm, Copley to test their all-round strength, stamina, mental grit, teamwork and camaraderie at Tough Mudder Perth 2014.
Across September 13-14 participants braved mud, ice-cold baths, fire and 10,000-volt electric shocks as ‘probably the toughest event on the planet’ returned to the Western Australia for the second consecutive year.
Commenting on the event, Tough Mudder’s general manager – Australasia, Jeremy Kann said it was great to see so many Western Australians from all walks of life willing to push themselves to the limit.
“This year we were keen to take things to the next level – with never-before-seen obstacles, new challenges and even more mud, it was great to see all of the participants tackling the course head on,” Mr Kann said.
This year, Tough Mudder Perth also boasted a number of never-before-seen obstacles – from the imposing “Fire in Your Hole”, the roman-rings inspired “Hangin Tough” and the aptly named “Pole Dancer” to name just a few.
“We love coming to WA and it was great to unleash these world class obstacles on the mad-minded locals,” Mr Kann said.
‘Fire in Your Hole’ is a clear highlight – an almost vertical 10m slide that shoots you through a wall of fire and propels you the length of a bus into a pit of muddy water.”
Across the weekend, some old Tough Mudder favourites also made a triumphant return including “Everest” – a greased-up quarter-pipe; “Arctic Enema” a below freezing ice bath; and “Electroshock Therapy” – a gauntlet of 10,000-volt-charged dangling wires participants must barrel through to get to the finish line.
Designed by British Special Forces, Tough Mudder is a 20km hard-core obstacle course.
“While some participants are drawn to the physical challenge of the event, others sign up for Tough Mudder events because, unlike other endurance events, it's not about who’s first past the post,” Mr Kann said.
The camaraderie and teamwork among participants and the sense of accomplishment on people’s faces as they cross the finish line – is unlike anything else.”
The weekend also saw ‘Mudders Legion’ hit the State for the first time – the official community of multi-Mudders.
The rite of passage for Legionnaires includes access to an extra section on the course littered with hazards plus a repeater-only obstacle, and a responsibility to lead and support fellow Mudders out on the course.
