NORTHAM Scout Group is celebrating 100 years since scouting started in town.
Scouting began in July 1914 when District Scoutmaster Stratton visited Northam for the purpose of conducting a 'Tenderfoot' examination and swearing-in ceremony.
As reported in The Daily News on August 8, 1914, Mr SW Sinclair was recommended for the position of scoutmaster and Mr Stratton gave instruction in stalking, despatch running and skirmishing.
There have been various scout groups in Northam over the century.
With support from the Scout Heritage Centre of WA, Northam Scout Group has discovered some details of the groups that operated: Northam East, Northam Rover troop, 74th WA Group, 80th WA Group, 1st Northam, 2nd Northam, St John's Own, St James' Own and St Joseph's Own among others.
There are also reports of a Sea Scout Group on the Avon River in the 1930s.
Northam Scout Group would like to find out more about the history of scouting in the area and meet all those who have been involved in scouting over the years.
With the support from a Shire of Northam community grant, there will be a centenary celebration in November.
In anticipation, the group would like all those who have been involved in scouting in Northam to contact it to register their details and, if possible, share their stories, photos and memorabilia.
As the group re-formed last October, it is sorely missing history of scouting in Northam and need help.
