A LARGE mixed field was out on the course last Saturday to contest the Quin's Gourmet Butchers Trophy, a two-person ambrose, stableford event.
The ambrose format provided a real mixed grill of participants: men, women, new players and veteran players.
There were some choice cuts and some plain offal.
In the men's section its was Matt Woods and Cameron Stewart who brought home the bacon with a good score of 63.25.
Runners-up were Phil Becker and Peter Richards with a score of 65.
Becker started strongly driving, chipping and putting well; Richards, initially a little like the trophy polisher at the Dockers, felt a little redundant.
However in true Richo style he bounced back to nail his drives and snag a few putts.
To prove who was the dominant golfing combination in the Becker/Richards households it was Jenny Becker and Wendy Richards who won the women's section with a great score of 70.25.
The winners of the nine-hole event were Simon Northey and Darren Oliver.
Novelties: Best third shot No. 5 M Keefe, nearest the pin 6 Lucy and Webb, nearest the pin 12 and 14 Esszig and Spadaccini, long putt 1 W Richards and J Becker.
On August 10 the NCC voucher stableford event winner was L Lee 38 points, runner-up P Beazley 36 points.
In August 17's Speciale Smash Repairs trophy stableford event, right from the start one player was playing above himself with long straight drives, irons on fire, chipping accurately and sinking putts.
Unfortunately he didn't win and it was Roger Podmore who drop-kicked his drives, shanked his irons and duffed his putts but scored 39 points to take out a well deserved victory.
Ollie Griffiths, unlike his team Essendon, couldn't get the points at the end to beat Podmore and was runner-up with 37 points.
This week's events: Friday WFI 4BBB par, Saturday and Sunday Kennedy Cup and Northam Open Stableford (names in for Kennedy Cup before draw Thursday night).
