NORTHAM'S Vinnie Caruana secured the state title on August 1 at Metro City, Northbridge.
To do it he had to beat Steven Kennedy, Australia's mixed-martial arts pound for pound champion in a unanimous decision after eight three-minute rounds.
It is Caruana's first title.
He said a one-point loss in June 20 helped spur him on to win the belt.
"I didn't want to taste defeat again," he said.
"I dug deep and everything I had went into earning this title - it's a dream I've had since a boy."
All Caruana's immediate family and close friends were there to watch him claim victory, something he is grateful for.
It is a hard road to the title.
Caruana undertakes a daily strength and conditioning program set out by sports scientist Caine Melbourne.
He also makes daily visits to Dragon Fire gym in Wangara, for 5pm sparring under the guidance of Angelo Hyder.
The champion's belt will be displayed in his lounge room with other boxing memorabilia.
While savouring his victory, Caruana said he would keep building and see how far he could go, saying there were no limits.
His favourite boxer is Mike Tyson, highlighting the story of what he became.
"Don't put limitations on a dream you have," he said.
