Golf
LAST weekend was the traditional two-day stroke event, the Corolin Cup sponsored by the Dempster Family.
Like the participants of the Avon Decent, the assembled field of golfers were primed and ready to race to the finish.
Some would power down the fairways leaving others in their wake, some would go with the flow, stay out of trouble and be in the mix at the finish, unfortunately most would find the trees, get dashed on the rocks and end in the water.
At the end of day one it was Rob Gray who had negotiated the course the best, coming in with a nett 66 followed by Brad Parker with 68 and Peter Beazley and Steve Dinka with 69.
A-grade winner B Parker 68, runner-up M Spadaccini 71; B-grade P Beazley 69, runner-up G Scollay 70; C-grade R Gray, 66 runner-up P Bray 74.
Novelty winners: nearest the pin 14 A Kean, best second shot 17 B Parker, long putt 3 T Morrell, nearest the pin 6 S Dinka, money hole P Beazley.
Day two, it was sink or swim for those who were within striking distance of Gray.
At the end of day two the secret to success was consistency; winner and runner-up had both put in two good games.
Steve Dinka won the Corolin Cup with scores of 69 and 70 (139).
Paddling close was Grant Scollay two strokes behind with a 70 and 71.
The 141 gross winner over two days was Mike Spadaccini with a 78 and 81 (159); A-grade winner M Woods 71 as well as gross winner on day two, runner-up P Becker 72; B-grade winner R Lucy 68, runner-up S Dinka 70; C-grade winner P Roe 72, runner-up T Morrell 72.
Novelty winners: nearest the pin 12 B Parker, longest putt 10 R Pitts' best third shot 3 M Woods.
Like the Avon Decent the idea is to participate, not everyone can win.
If the Corolin Cup were the Avon Descent one wayward golfer would have been found up the Mortlock River without a paddle; well done for participating Sarge, perhaps the idea of swapping protein bars for chocolate bars was not the best.
Fixtures: Today Brick Mart Trophy, stableford event, Saturday and Sunday stableford events.
